    And his operations are loaded with debt. I know he's still fairly young, and I'm sure he'll sell before he dies, but if you think things are bad now it is only going to get worse when that happens.

    Copy editor Dave Curtis is leaving San Jose. That will reduce the layoffs by one.

    Anyone know where he is going? That is two big hits to the sports copy desk this week.

    Unfortunately, the "hits" are going to keep on coming.

    Some tidbits from the Pipeline, not pretty stuff:

    The aforementoned copy editor left on his own. The total take from sports is two copy editors, a part-time clerk. And Sharks writer Victor Chi. Who has been there 12 or so years and is close to his wedding date.

    Biggest uproar among staff: No manager above assistant level got cut is the RUMOR. If it is true, well, it is interesting because the management structure dates to the days of the 400-person newsroom and it is now about half that.

    Damn.

    And, of course, people who left of their own accord won't be replaced:

    * Assistant sports editor/design Tim Ball.
    * Assistant sports editor/nights Will McCahill.
    * G.A. and soccer writer Dylan Hernandez.
    * Copy editor Dave Curtis.

    I'm really sorry to hear about Victor Chi.

    Very, very nice person who did a good job on that Sharks beat. He, Ross McKeown and San Jose GM Doug Wilson used to eat pizza together just before games. No business talk. Just life.

  8. can anyone get me a web address for circulation sizes? I'd like to make a few comparisons.

    I can say at least one of the resigned, Glenn Rabinowitz (a former colleague of mine), was just announced as editor of the San Mateo County Times. A major downgrade in circ, but he probably saved someone's job.
