Working for Newhouse isn't a bad thing. Those Bama papers take care of their people.

WOODY: How's the world treating you, Mr. Peterson? NORM: Like the way a baby treats a new diaper.

So this guy leaves the Merc and the BANG loses its top two IT people to Yahoo! (YAHOO?!) What's going on?

The Mercury News was declared a disaster area a while back.

It's also possible the latest exit was not lamented by top management. Anyone with a big salary could be getting a push. That's what happened with the previous rash of AMEs leaving.

Sure, I suppose we all can cut MMatt a break because of the carefully inserted "possible" in his/her post, but there's a fine line between posing a question and otherwise throwing out an uninformed statement with a caveat attached.

The Merc already is advertising for the position -- as an AME.

Some were pushed, some left on their own volition. But if you look at who's largely been departing that paper -- either under their own power or with a shove -- it hasn't been the folks in the glass offices.

Besides, as has already been noted, the Merc -- the staff-trimmingest paper in the land -- is filling this job. Doesn't seem like one the powers-that-be wanted to extinguish.

Bump, what you're saying is not exactly correct; the design AME left in the recent spring purge. The guy who left this week was essentially a designer at heart, so he might have been handling some of those duties.

The editor of the editorial pages also left a couple of months ago.

    So did the AME/features.

    So did the AME/business.

I would say that is a pretty good chunk of people in glass offices.

P.S. In today's world, being forced out of a job is obviously no reflection on competence. In San Jose, if you're not a reporter, page designer, copy editor or hard-working, hands-on department head, you'll be toast.

The copy editor ranks at that paper, which once numbered in the 40s, are down to about a dozen.

Innumerable reporters are gone, including the guy who was covering the 49ers.

In the last purge, management types were offered fairly attractive buyouts, hence the departures you cite (a boatload of cash to abandon a sinking ship -- no-brainer!). If you were in the Guild, you got cab fare.

Other than that, Matt, your facts are impeccable.
