I doubt somebody from the SFC told the "pr girl" that "they hate UFC and would NEVER cover" it.

If the readers make it known they want that coverage, it'll get in the paper. I'm guessing the SE there knows his readers better than we do, so I'll defer to him on this one.

And White sounds like a tee-ball parent bitching about the lack of coverage. STFU Dana, you don't need the free publicity for your PPV.

I wonder if the UFC advertised the fights in the Chron. Anyone know?

The Chron should have done a front and center story on MMA. Their job is to inform readers and they missed a golden opportunity to do it with MMA.
This happens everywhere and I see the attitude with a lot of posters here. Just because it's not one of the mainstream sports doesn't mean you can't go and find a good story.
    But that would require work.
Sorry for the rant. I'm sick.

  4. In terms of pay-per-view sales, this event is right up there with the Mayweather-Mosley fight for biggest of the year. If the Mayweather fight was in your backyard, would you even consider not covering it?

I agree that the Chronicle should have covered the event. They dropped the ball big time, and there's nothing wrong with spicing up your daily crap with a new sport once or twice a year. This would've been the perfect opportunity to do it.

But Dana White is acting like he's the one who lost out, not the Chronicle. The first time the CEO of a major sports organization dropped an f-bomb when he felt wronged, I laughed. Now I yawn and roll my eyes.

PPV sales prove the sport has a cult following of blood-thirsty jackasses, just like WWE.

Whoever the fuck Dana White is, that tweet proves he is a fucking moron. Great way to get pub for your sport ... call the Chron SE a fucking asshole.

That again gets into what Rick and I are saying -- there are probably a lot of Chronicle subscribers who follow boxing to some degree and would want to have that coverage, and the Chron probably feels like they have someone on staff who could go there and make it a worthwhile read. MMA is a whole other world.

I am not arguing with the huge growth or the success of the sport. But I'm sure that at one time or another we've all espoused the theory that newspapers need to figure out what they do well, figure out what your readers want, and then do that. Along those lines, MMA is clearly something very few newspapers would do well and very few of their readers would want.

Oh and BTW I don't know why anyone would take Dana White's word that the Chron was rude. The more likely possibility is a 180-degree turn from that version.

I doubt if Brian France would have told sports editors in the Southeast to Fuck Off back when they were wanting NASCAR coverage.

Instead, he met with them. Pleaded. Begged. Bought advertising. Explained how big it was and would be, and how many readers they could reach just like the ones who went to their weekend dirt track races whose results were published Sunday.

    Dana White is an idiot.

Yes Dana White is a real idiot, the sport is really struggling.

I think MMA, and Dana White in particular, is desperate for mainstream acceptance, of which newspapers are for now, still a large part.

True ... but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. You want to be taken seriously, don't act like a child whose mama insisted he eat his veggies before dessert. I think it was mentioned uptopic, but I've got to agree: He does sound like a whiny JV parent.

Here, there's an MMA show every few months at the local Indian casino. I don't have as big a grasp on its nuances as I would baseball or football, but I figure everyone in the audience is a potential reader, so we try to have someone out there.

It doesn't matter how well MMA is doing or if it is struggling. Obviously it's doing well and White can be credited for that for his marketing and the product.

But he's still an idiot for his "tweet" about the Chronicle.

He could have been better off contacting the SE or visiting to discuss future events and coverage, instead of acting like a tool.
