I heard an interview with Billy Joel a while back where he talked about how the song Allentown came about. He wrote it after recalling a conversation he had with some guys after playing Bethlehem years earlier. He was starting to make it big, but not quite a star yet and these guys were saying you'll never play here again, by this time next year you'll be famous nothing good ever stays around here.

He used Allentown instead of Bethlehem just because it sounded better.

'Girlfriend in a Coma' is actually pretty funny.
'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' not so much.

Mellencamp producing Scarecrow and Lonesome Jubilee in the mid-80's is the music equivalent of Brady Anderson hitting 50 homers. Came out of nowhere. Those two albums are fantastic rock albums. 30 years later and they've held up very well.

Never heard that. Interesting, because looking at the prosody Allentown and Bethlehem are both amphimacers.

The sound of cows dying in Meat is Murder is hardly a pick-me-up.

There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
    And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

    You shut your mouth
    How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
    Just like everybody else does

I think it was mostly because Allentown and shutting the factories down rhymed.

When your exotic dancer girlfriend is cheating on you, now THAT'S sad. Heartbreaking, to hear Bret Michaels tell it.

“She answered the phone, but she sounded a little odd,” says Michaels. “Immediately she gave me that ‘I’m really sleepy’ line, which was not something she would normally say. And then I heard it – the whispering in the background. It was obviously a guy’s voice. Now, a female voice, that I could’ve lived with, you know what I’m saying? Hell, I may have even welcomed it! But another guy... It broke my heart.”
