My mother is going to be devestated. He's probably her favorite actor of all time.

I've always been partial to Cool Hand Luke myself, but whoever said he never made a bad movie I kinda have to agree with.

Guess, that is a good movie ... not to thread-jack, but it was/is an even better book, by one of my favorite writers, Richard Russo.

May women of a certain age feel precisely that way.

He's a damn fine writer. I loved Empire Falls.

He and Harrison Ford are the only men my mother and I agree on.

Back in the day it was Newman and Brando.

This is a sports writers board and nobody has mentioned Reggie Dunlop yet?

    *shakes her head*

In all seriousness, prayers and good wishes to him and his family. The Sting is one of the all-time great movies.

No doubt. Guess some men just cross generational lines.

just hope he's not in mych pain. hey, the guy's 83, bless him. he deserves a comfortable end for all the joy he's given us.

i'm a huge fan of all the films already mentioned. in particular "butch and sundance" and "the sting." i'm comfy enough in my manhood to admit i had a young mancrush on redford, in particular, after "butch."

one of my best buds drove an cab for a nyc service in his younger years. had newman as a passenger once. says he was a great, way cool guy. when my bud mentioned he hadn't seen "butch and sundance" - this was the late '70's, newman almost fell out of his back seat.

"you've never seen it?" he asked incredulously. "what the hell are you waiting for?"

i rented it to watch with my bud a couple of years ago. his reaction?

"newman was right," my bud said. "what the hell was i waiting for?"

    godspeed, paul.

    The Towering Inferno?

But I agree on Nobody's Fool and almost all the rest.

Also don't forget his cameo in the first Letterman show from the old Sullivan theater, when he stood up demanding to see Cats.
