It's not sheer nonsense. There are plenty of situations that a good officer can resolve without resorting to force by talking to the subject. Actually talking to them, instead of issuing commands. Sometimes that takes time.

It's one reason that some departments have actually moved away from the continuum because some officers feel that they must move from one step to the next as soon as the subject isn't complying.

When the courts evaluate use-of force, they look at whether it was objectively reasonable. I think it's hard to watch this video - even if he had been speaking with her for several minutes - and find that use of force on a passive high school student as reasonable.

I'm including all the verbalization from the teacher that took place before the cop got there. Kid was asked repeatedly to put her phone away and continued to disobey the teacher.

And yes, it should be the officer's concern that class is being held up. By the time an officer is called the time for discussion is over.

Seriously ... I have a hard time believing that reality even needs to be brought up.

Let's face it. He could have live-sacrificed her on a stake, then drained and drank her blood, and you'd be standing up for the guy.

Well no, I wouldn't. Only an idiot like you would think that.

So a school resource officer's job is to come bust heads after the teachers have done all the talking? Right. Whatever was said by other people before he got there doesn't obviate his responsibility to only deploy force when it is objectively reasonable.

Ok, what's your idea of an objectively reasonable amount of time?

Keep in mind the little brat is disrupting a classroom full of fellow students.

Before putting hard hands on someone who is non-threatening and passively resisting, without trying soft hands first? Somewhere around forever.

I'm sure you went into this with a very open mind.

The fastest way for a sheriff to get dismissed at the poles is to lose the faith of his rank-and-file, which is what would happen if those within his department felt he was throwing a good deputy under the bus for political purposes. That's reality.

Any truth to the rumor that the SRO's nickname was the Peacemaker?

Oh, no, That's what the Sheriff calls his $300,000 armored personnel carrier

In March the sheriff and SWAT team of Richland County, South Carolina, posed for a photo with an impressive new piece of equipment: an M113A1 armored personnel carrier. The vehicle, which moves on tank-like tracks, features a belt-fed, turreted machine gun that fires .50-caliber rounds.

The sheriff, Leon Lott, obtained the $300,000 vehicle through the 1033 program, named for a 1997 federal law streamlining the Defense Department’s transfer of surplus military equipment to local police departments.
    ...
Sheriff Lott has named his new acquisition The Peacemaker, explaining in a press release that the name is fitting because “the bible refers to law enforcement in Matthew 5:9 ‘Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.’ ” The announcement concludes, “Sheriff Lott hopes to always bring resolution to all conflict through peaceful means.”

    The Peacemaker

Sounds like he's all for using "soft hands". LOL.

    I'm sorry, are you high?

Your answer to a snot-nosed punk disrupting a class is to turn it into a hostage situation and wait her out? Seriously?
