Two things you have all wrong.
- Dulac drove to Winged Foot, so he didn't fly. You are wrong on that account.
- Also, he was there not so much to cover the US Open, but to do the whole "The US Open is coming to Oakmont and our backyard next year, this is what it looks like" kind of features. Much, much different the year before it is at Oakmont than the year after it leaves.
So when you say that two years ago it didn't have much of a local angle, you are so far wrong it is laughable. It had local angles on a million levels, because it was on its way to Pittsburgh the following year.

What difference does it make if he flew or drove to New York? It's 400 miles one way from Pittsburgh to Mamaroneck, N.Y. Even if the paper reimbursed him 25 cents a mile, that's $200 round trip, which is a reasonable cost of a flight on that route. Financially, the difference is a couple of dollars -- literally.

I'm not in the biz, but I was in the media center at Oakmont and I can tell you that was astounded at the number of newspapers that were there to cover the event.

Not doubting you, bagel, but I wonder if an east coast Open draws significantly better than one in San Diego. The Pittsburgh situation discussed here would be a prime example.
