Playing with Tiger and Phil won't hurt him, but his broken finger might.

Plus, Scott hasn't sniffed a major, let alone a U.S. Open. His best finish is a T21 two years ago and he's missed the cut in four of his six.

Good for you. Go compare workloads with Art Spander.

2 and 16 would be the par-4s, in that case. 9 and 11 are three-shot holes for even longer hitters, depending on the wind.

Boy, we're testier than normal, Hondo. Relax. Step away from your computer, go outside and get some of that fresh sea air.

You're not having to play Torrey this week, just write about it. Relax and get some of that good coffee the USGA puts in the media center. On second thought, don't; it will add more edginess you don't need.

Unlike the prolific Spander, I wasn't writing for Scotland, Britain, Wales, Tunisia, San Francisco, Oakland, Martinez, Maine, the Orkney Islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and Ireland.

And has played the course more than even Mickelson has -- by his estimation, more than 1,000 times.

But I don't see people lining up to put money down on him... for good reason.

    Birdie,

How do you think former U.S. Open winners will fare at Torrey, given that they've been able to tame past USGAifed courses?

I agree with you on Perez. I just hope he makes the cut in his hometown.

Mickelson note: His birthday is June 16.

    Claws...

The only issue is length. That's why players like Furyk and Zach Johnson you would normally put among the front-runners aren't being mentioned this week.

I know they're going to move the tees around on several holes. Still, a course playing 7,600+ at sea level with kikuyu fairways that don't facilitate roll is going to cull the herd of potential winners more than somewhat.
