Just for kicks, here's what the bowl lineup might have been under the old system

Rose: Oregon vs. Wisconsin (if the Big Ten tie is broken by highest-ranked team).
    Orange: Oklahoma vs. Virginia Tech
    Fiesta: Ohio State vs. Nebraska???
    Sugar: Auburn vs. TCU???

We would have probably ended up with a split national champion.

Or if you have that then have a plus-one system where you take the two best teams after the meaningless bowls. Whatever. It's a joke.

If Hondo's scenario was REALLY old school, then the Big Ten tie would've been broken by a vote of the school ADs, in which case the howling, and voting, would still be going on.

It's all cyclical. Some years a conference is good; some years, not. Florida State played in a BCS game five years ago (or thereabouts) with four losses, didn't it?

Actually, the old Rose Bowl rule would have been in effect: The team that has gone the longest without going to Pasadena. Thus, it would have been Michigan State.

For all the mocking of UConn in the BCS, well, if there were a playoff system, they would probably get a spot in that by virtue of winning the Big East. That's the way it goes. Will be the same when the Rams make the playoffs at 7-9.

This isn't a one-year aberration. The Big East is clearly the worst of the BCS conferences, and wears that label consistently.

Last year Cincinnati went undefeated. In 2006 WVU makes the title game if they don't choke on the last weekend against Pitt.

Why is Arkansas going to a BCS game over LSU?

    Didn't Arkansas beat LSU?

    Exceptions that prove the rule?
