@typefitter Golf Channel listing Tiger above Snead in graphic, even though both have 82 wins and Sam's already finished his round and is in the clubhouse!

The Golf Channel broadcast commercials were amazing. It was show two shots, five minutes of commercials. and the trophy presentation dude talking was also incredibly funny in that he would not stop chatting. If Tiger has another back surgery, we can look at that, with him standing there fidgeting in one spot, the way we look back at him going against the SEALS in the killhouse, as the moment the injury occurred.

Awesome moment though. No predictions going forward because he's always seemingly one swing from being done but, again, it's just fun seeing him kick ass again against a new generation, years after it seemed like he'd never be competing again aside from the ceremonial shot at the Masters when he's 68. It's nights like this it's fascinating to go back and watch videos of, say, his chipping woes from 2015. A lot of people said then golfers never get over these yips and they were right. Of course he did. And 1,000 other things.

82's just ludicrous. Win 5 times a year for 16 straight seasons and you're still going to be two short. Since 1981, five non-Tiger guys have won 5 times in a season and they all did it once.

Really surprising they did this. If I'm NBC, I'm already on the phone. They have to do something with Hicks though.

My intention wasn't to diminish it, just to lament a little that it wasn't over here in the prime of golf season. It would have been a bigger deal, with more eyeballs and more/better coverage. That's not debatable.

Would love to know how much you'd be up if betting $100 on Tiger in every event he played.

  6. 1: Woods is still shakey week to week. Def. best he’s looked since Augusta. How long will it last?
2: He’s not Sam Jackson Snead. Snead has more than 82 wins. PGA Won’t recognize them. TW def. plays a tougher field week to week. Still not as good as Snead.

Comparing generations is brutal. Comparing two generations apart is impossible.

Generational comparisons are tough. Snead has some wins not recognized. Also had some included that are sketchy at best. Nelson’s win total skewed by thin war-time fields. Etc.

As shown above, it’s beyond incredible that there’s a 1 in 4 chance that Woods will win when he plays.

It can definitely end with any swing. But, having watched almost all of the Japan event (thanks to odd hours and insomnia), Woods’ swing looked effortless most of the time. He’ll still ratchet it up at times, but the motion is far less violent than before. Health-permitting, he can play and win with that swing for a few years.

Why is that even needed? Snead played when they were running commercials that "Dr. Smith and other physicians say Lucky Strike's are the healthiest cigarettes for YOU!"; TW plays when they have cryo(sp)-chambers for muscle rehabilitation. The conditions are completely changed.

Look at pictures of old courses, the greens are better in my local elementary school across the street than when Snead played.

One of Snead's recognized wins was against in a field with four players. He played a bunch of events with extremely tiny fields. The PGA Tour counts some Four-Ball events among his victories. As others have said, trying to compare the two eras is pointless. It also took Snead like 200 more events to get to 82 than it took Woods.

The guys in Snead's era had to play every week just to earn a living on tour. Guys in Woods' era do not. Hell, in one of Harvey Pennick's books he tells a story about a guy who showed up at a club where he worked and hustled a few local members. Then Pennick saw the guy's photo in a week-old paper. He had won the Masters. There are so many differences between golf in the 40s and now that comparisons are ridiculous, as has been noted above by others.
