You can't walk into the Ferrari dealership expecting to pay Chevy prices.

You could, but you'd be missing the point. Big spending doesn't guarantee anything. It just stacks the deck. Just as failing to spend stacks the deck the other way.

Of course, even most of the devoted baseball apologists on this board admit that the high-revenue franchises have an advantage in MLB. The reasonable ones just question how large an impact spending has and whether or not baseball can or should do more to level the playing field.

Most people are over it by now anyway. Especially because the lower-spending teams are just choosing to put tens of millions of dollars in their pockets instead of on the field.

How much of the lower-spending teams choose to be that way? Whether because they'd rather pocket the money, or because they recognize that spending massive amounts of money isn't going to help them at the stage they're at?

Funny that you tried to argue the point anyway.

Of course, a salary floor would make it impossible, or at least more difficult, for the lower-spending teams to do that, but y'all don't want to hear about such things.

It looks like the key to success is spending in the middle third of franchises. I think that has stood the test of time too (last 5-10 years anyway).

That is part of it, but there are also huge differences in revenue.

Nobody ever suggested it wouldn't, but it would be better with a level playing field. Some folks are satisfied with a game that is rigged to favor teams with higher revenue potential.

Is that a little unfair? Sure. Baseball's revenues are more regional than the NFL's, for example, so MLB couldn't go with that exact financial model even if the owners wanted to go that route. Also, MLB has a much stronger player's union to contend with, so there are limits to its options.

It would be nice if some folks could skip the ridiculous denials and snark and simply acknowledge the reality of the situation, but that seems unlikely given the history of SJ.com.
