They can't hire anybody who coached at Penn State in the last 30+ years because they don't want to hire a guy who has to answer "What did you know? What did you see?" on a regular basis.

This hire has to be a clean break from the Paterno regime.

The best they can do in terms of local ties is a "name" Western Pa. guy who has no connection to Penn State.

Which is why there is really only one choice for this job:

Schiano was Curley's guy so I think he is probably out.

I had forgotten that. That's a good point.

Arizona State is one heck of an attractive job. Erickson dropped the ball with this one. The Sun Devils can definitely compete in the PAC-12 with the right coach.

We've been hearing that about ASU and the Pac 10/12 for what? 30 years?

So nearly a year later, I guess we can make the final diagnosis: Urban Meyer was indeed sick...of coaching Florida.

Schiano's Rutgers teams have underachieved in a terribly weak conference the last four or five years, and that's another reason he's probably out.

If Stanford and Cal can, so can ASU. But I agree, it has been said a lot over the years.

Schiano should have bolted in '06 after the Texas Bowl win. His window of opportunity has closed IMO.

I think he gets one more year, but mercy, he didn't do himself any favors. Vols haven't really been competitive outside of tomato-can games since September, and that was a baaaad Kentucky game they lost the streak to.

It also says a lot about the depth of the Pac-12 that, most likely, one-third of its programs will be starting over with a new coach next season.
