See the rule change at the break of the story?

The NHL was not prepared to adopt no touch icing but did amend Rule 81.1 (Icing) to make it illegal for puck-chasers trying to prevent icing to hit another player. The rule now states that "Any contact between opposing players while pursuing the puck on an icing must be for the sole purpose of playing the puck and not for eliminating the opponent from playing the puck. Unnecessary or dangerous contact could result in penalties being assessed to the offending player."

    I like it a lot.

Wow, that's leaving the door wide open for interpretation. Be a lot of arguing over how that's called on a nightly basis.

I guess so. But the intent of the rule is clear -- saving players from potential injury at the hands of idiots like Downie.

I think it sounds like a good compromise, and am interested to see it implemented. Is there anywhere else that has tried this rule?

Any word on whether Melrose gets confirmed tomorrow? I've been away, and was expecting one to be named before Friday's draft.

Hey Armchair, maybe you should change the thread title to 2008 Off-season NHL thread.

The other one is kind of large after all.

It would be great if Barry got back in and someone got Pat Burns back behind a bench. In the same division.

    Oh yeah.
