Rumors fly that Egypt's president died during gall bladder surgery.

    More than a week ago.

That's right, no one can confirm that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is still alive following surgery on March 6.

All is well! says Egypt's government. He's just sleeping it off. Or something.

BLOGS!!!!!!!!!!!! and Twitter say other things.

Whatever the case, Egypt's stock market took a nosedive.

Have we stepped through the looking glass in journalism when anonymous "tweets" are quoted in hard news stories

In this case, yeah. This might be fitting into a long tradition of leaders ailing behind closed doors, such as Soviet premiers who used to be out six to 12 months with "the sniffles," and Castro feeling however he felt. Heck, in Chicago (of course) a whole primary election turned on making sure absolutely zero news got out about how severely ill Cook County Board president John Stroger was, so he wouldn't lose his hotly contested primary. He didn't lose, so suddenly the family announced that John Stroger was near death. So we got stuck with his son, Todd "Urkel" Stroger, who was mercifully tossed out in the most recent primary.
