Robinson can't sub for Bonds

Couple of points that stand out:

    1. Aaron broke Ruth's record in 1974, not 1973 as Chafets noted twice.

    2. His notion that white fans and writers will treat Bonds impending accomplishment with disdain totally ignores the fact that Aaron has said he will not be on hand when Bonds hits 756. If this were truly and exclusively a racial issue (and not a steroids issue), don't you think Aaron would break his back to see Bonds eclipse his mark in person?

Hank has always been a crusader against racism, so much so that even if he loathed the ground above which Barry Bonds floats, he would still support him in person if he thought for a minute that people hate Bonds just for being black.

Since Hank is obviously more than smart enough to realize people hate Bonds not because of his skin colour but because he's a reprehensible cheating asshole, he can safely keep his distance.

Henry Louis Aaron's home run record, a record achieved by two decades of true perserverance and courage by one of America's greatest athletes, in the face of truly stunning obstacles, will be desecrated and erased by a chemical-pumped freak, himself the pampered son of a millionaire, whose most fearsome battle with social injustice came at the hands of a divorce decree.

The amount of holes (and just plain incorrect facts) in this story is awful, especially for a paper the size of the L.A. Times.

Bonds is a cheating asshole. Black, white, brown, red, Martian — that doesn't matter. How can people legitimately write things like this? How can he be compared to Jackie Robinson? This is troubling.

Like him or not, Bonds is a great player and his many accomplishments on the field deserve respect. His numbers speak for themselves. All the hating by sports journalists is not going to stop him from breaking the record. If Bonds falls short, it will have had nothing to do with all the haters. There are as many sports journalists who are pompous asholes as there are athletes.

You realize this is a patently ridiculous argument, right?

You just heard someone else say it, and really liked the "take"?

If hating people who taint a great game by taking enough drugs to kill most elephants makes one a hater, then I'm a hater. And damn proud to be one.

You say hater like it's a bad thing. In this case, it isn't.

Yes, he'll own that record. And he'll know he did it by cheating a great game and one of the most courageous athletes in history.

He'll own that record for about seven years, then ARod will pass him by.

Hey, I like Bonds. I think tons and tons of guys are doing stuff. They are.

Him and Mark are the fall guys. And Rafi and a few others.

The lesser-known guys are worse, because they are the ones fighting to keep a job. They'll take all kinds of stuff, IMO

But creamora already knows I think that, as do many of the other posters here.

I still want to know how Zev Chafets ended up writing this article

And thus, those who had not previously called creamora's judgment into question, now joined the chorus.

Other people cheating doesn't make what Bonds did right.
