That's what I've been hearing, too. I hope that's not why this went down.

Supposedly, Lovie handpicked his successor when he got there, and it wasn't Rivera. So I don't think it's that. Probably just the Bears being cheap. Again.

In fairness to Rivera, he interviewed for some of those jobs this year. Nobody could hire him until the Bears season was over, and most teams weren't going to wait until the first week of February to sign a head coach.

How many yards did Rex Grossman give up? How many tackles did he miss? How often did he fail to adjust to the same running plays and short passes? Put a little thought into your posts next time.

    Probably true, Oz.

Rivera will do well in San Diego. Weird, though, how teams play hardball with these coaches. I don't feel sorry for any of them, mind you, but it is still interesting to see it played out like that in the open.

It could also be that Smith didn't want to go through all this with Rivera again next year and decided to cut him loose. He'll coach LBs at San Diego in 2007 and accept the Browns' head coaching job sometime around New Year's Day.

What's up with franchises screwing people over like that? Marty and Rivera could have been canned weeks ago. At least then they would have had a chance at landing on their feet. Instead, Rivera lands on his head and Marty is still falling.

If the Bears felt Rivera was leaving Smith had probably begun moving towards promoting Babich to DC. When Rivera went 0-fer in the interview process Smith had a choice to make. He could keep Rivera and go through the same thing all over again after next season or he could part ways with Rivera and not have to worry about it anymore. It's not like Rivera was going to wind up homeless and living in a refrigerator box on Lower Wacker Drive if the Bears let him go.

Here's a little thought: If Grossman throws to the right people and Thomas and Jones (albeit only one of them once the other went down) run to the right holes, then the defense isn't out there for 40 minutes. Oh, and Grossman missed the tackle on Kelvyn Hayden, for starters. For more details, please consult your play-by-play.

Lovie tried to do him a favor by not letting him go earlier. You'd think it would be a lot easier to land a head coaching job as a hot coordinator, rather than an unemployed one. Also, this one had absolutely nothing to do with the Bears being cheap. Nothing at all.
