Forgot to post this the other day. Vivian Trimble co-founded what I think is the best female band ever, Luscious Jackson. Her cancer came back. She was 59.

    From Rolling Stone ...

VIVIAN TRIMBLE, BEST known for her work with Luscious Jackson, has died at 59 following a battle with cancer. The multi-instrumentalist and singer had been being treated for the disease for several years, per a post on Luscious Jackson’s Instagram page.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved friend and band member Viv on Tuesday,” the band wrote. “She had been in treatment for cancer for several years and developed a complication on Monday. We were not expecting this.”

They added, “She was a great friend and a gifted musician and choreographer, but it was being a partner to David and a mother to Nate and Rebecca that gave her the greatest joy. We are devastated beyond words to lose our graceful sister.”

They had such a great sound.

    That sucks, Songbird. RIP.

Wasn’t a huge LJ fan but saw them open for REM in the mid-1990s and they blew Stipe and company off the stage.

I saw them on that tour as well, in Greensboro. I wasn't familiar with them before that but they were really good.

Very sad. Just heard Naked Eye two days ago on the way to work Love that song.

    There's always a sports angle...

The band's name was derived from a malapropism of the name of former American basketball player Lucious Jackson, after the band members heard an announcer on ESPN's SportsCenter mispronounce Jackson's first name as "Luscious" and thought it would make for a great band name.[2] - Wiki

"Luscious Johnson" is reserved for the star of the first basketball/porn movie.

Same. I paid $100 to see them at Star Lake Ampitheater outside Pittsburgh on that tour.

I say to see them, because it started pouring down rain, the temp dropped, and we weren't dressed for the conditions. By the time it all stopped, I was freezing and we left. I never did see R.E.M. Ever.

Yeah, count me among those whose entire exposure to Luscious Jackson was seeing them open for REM on that tour.

I had seen REM at a ballroom at my university in 1986. They were brilliant. Seeing them years later in the worst amphitheater I've ever been in... very much not the same.

Luscious Jackson were perfectly fine as an opener. RIP.

BTW, Murmur is 40 years old this week, which is a reminder that it is timeless but we are not.

RIP, Ms Trimble. For some of us, Luscious Jackson was part of the soundtrack of our lives.

A couple of days after the Covenant shooting, my mother and a friend drove me around Nashville. After hunkering down to avoid COVID and then the whole heart failure thing, I'd ended up not seeing huge swaths of the city for north of three years. We played music we loved. When the disc got to Ladyfingers, this line jumped out.

I'm so tired of my guns and my vanity,
I'd like to trade them in for some sanity...

Vivian Trimble shouldn't be dead right now. This is the stupid timeline, isn't it?
