    I do it all the time. It's unnecessary. As is prior to. Always before.

    The way I learned it, those who say prior to when they mean before should use posterior to when they mean after.

    "Prior to" is like nails on a chalkboard.

    Truth be told, I always change "prior to" to "before" too. And I always think of Stanke when I do. Today, for obvious reasons, it just felt a little more meaningful to do so, since he's the one who pretty much wrote our style guide. It felt like more of a tribute today.

    I won't quote the rule here, but if you saw it, you'd probably recognize his touch.

    The great bosses I've had in this business, whom I can count on one hand (with a finger or two to spare), make up for the other hand-and-both-feet worth who were meh or worse. Craig was one of the best, perfect for a newsroom, for all the right reasons. R.I.P.
