The News-Standard, a five-year-old weekly paper serving the Kentucky area of Brandenburg/Meade County, printed its final edition last week.

The paper won more than 80 Kentucky Press Association awards for its weekly division in its short-lived history.

FWIW, it did NOT make much sense for a county that small to have two weekly papers. Its rival, the older Meade County Messenger (http://www.meadecountymessenger.com/v2/content.aspx?IsHome=1&MemberID=2035&ID=28963) has a worse design and even worse writing/layout.

Speaking for myself and coworker KYSportsWriter, The News-Standard was the better of the two Meade papers. By far.

Won't matter much to a lot of folks on this site, but for a weekly, The News-Standard should still be around (at least compared to the Meade County Messenger ... which my shop does NOT own, but prints).

Somebody started a newspaper five years ago? I find its demise difficult to lament.

Also, that editor's farewell desperately needed a copy editor. Desperately.

It's amazing to think that somebody launched a newspaper five years ago. Talk about bad timing.
