    It'll be "odd" either way. If they recast, for the first movie or so the new actor will seem like an interloper in the Chekov role, especially to hardcore fans.

    "Beyond" will have to deal with the offscreen death of Spock Prime, so they'll have some experience with the drill.

    Use some CGI and shoot a scene to tack on to ST3:

    Chekov slows down his starship, upon seeing another familiar starship pass by. It's Sulu. They roll their windows down ... wait, I saw this somewhere else. Forget it.
