    From what I heard, it was Vivian Vance who said no. I think William Frawley was willing to do the show so he could make more money, but Vance didn't need to.

    Frawley was in the John Wayne movie "Fighting Seabees"-a WW2 flick that also featured Jimmie Dodd of Mickey Mouse Club fame. Frawley gets shot outside a bunker and it's one of the worst, most fake deaths you've ever seen.
