Mr Hecht,

Greatest Columbo ever: Cassidy as the magician, The Great Santini. Nothing even close. (Commodore's boat and McGoohan's at the Citadel are distanced.)

Culp's football team gm is in the top 5 though.

Poor old team owner Dean Jagger gets it in the head with a block of ice.

The story of Culp's character: He was a GM who started out as a p.r. guy. The Lakers make a cameo appearance--Happy Hairston for sure, but Riley and Goodrich as well. (I'm going from memory.)

Next to Jack Cassidy and Patrick McGoohan the best Columbo repeat perp.

Opens the question: Who would be the GM most likely to murder an owner? But I digress.

I knew Friend of the Friendless, fellow Columbo savant, would weigh in here. Also was murderer Bart Keppler (sp?), who put subliminal messages in his test marketing campaigns, thus ensuring a thirsty client would leave the theater to get his; and IIRC a private investigator hired by Ray Milland to see if Milland's wife was having an affair. Culp wound up blackmailing and murdering her. Case hinged on a contact lens lost in shag carpeting, I believe.

Great Columbo villain. No. 2 to Jack Cassidey, in my opinion.

Jack Cassidy was scary, under any circumstances. Was married to Shirley
Jones for a long time. Could never figure that one out.

He was also incredibly jealous of his son David's success.

David, meanwhile, looks more and more like his father every day.

I'm with you there. Loved him as a villain, though. Oily, but didn't take himself seriously.

And as an owner of Partridge Family records, I still think that David Cassidy has a good voice.

Peter Fonda and Robert Vaughn are surviving 60s cool guys of a certain rank (the tier below Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin and John Cassavetes not including British icons such as Michael Caine and Terence Stamp). Culp joins George Peppard, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Jack Cassidy, etc. It looks like Dennis Hopper is next up.

I don't put James Garner in the pantheon because there's a bit of him that's not cool per se. James Caan is a slightly later vintage.
