He was brilliant in "Defending Your Life," as well. It was actually this role that led to him being cast as Artie.

The scene where he takes a hammer to Norman Mailer in that weird fucking Mailer movie is hard to watch. First thing I thought of though. Norman's real-life children crying. Mailer nearly bit and, um, tore Torn's ear off. Yeesh.

It was a litmus test for SJ.com -- RIP threads for Ross Perot and Rip Torn. Y'all do not disappoint.

Wonder if the two will trade war stories at the pearly gates.

@pareene every Artie moment is my favorite Artie moment but I regularly think about when he's talking to the worried network suit and refers to Wu-Tang as "Staten Island's streetwise troubadours"

@pareene @moryan And mine is the next scene, when the network exec fears Wu-Tang is too “urban” for Middle America and Artie replies, “I’ll call my friend Lenny Kravitz. He’s only half ‘urban.’”

  11. Honestly stunned he lived as long as he did.
Crazy SOB ... like, Rod Stieger-level nuts.

Also did some video game voice work (God of War III).
