Rick Alvord, former longtime sports editor at The Daily News in Longview, Wash. passed away this week from cancer. He was only 50.

This just sucks, both because Rick was so young and because of the guy he was. I had the pleasure of doing several stories for him in my freelance days and greatly enjoyed the experience. Great, great guy. Prayers to his family.

Only knew him as a freelance reporter, but yes, he was very easy to work for. Sorry to see this post.

I met him a couple of years ago in a job setting. Warm guy, told funny stories, and he always carried around a golf club in the office, putting him a few seconds closer to playing nine holes. He'll be missed.

Oh my God. I knew Rick. Came close to taking a job there several years back. Shocking!

Sounds like a really good guy, reading the story and the comments.

As I approach that age, it hits home even a bit more.

    RIP, Mr. Alvord...
