I was lucky enough to be Richard's direct editor for three years at The Dallas Morning News, and never worked with a kinder, more genuine person. He was a committed journalist, and a tireless worker who wanted to get better every day. I join everyone else who has his family in our thoughts.

Met him in the press box at the Indy 500 back in his DMN days. Always admired his work and how he could cover everything well for ESPNDallas.

I'm two years older than he was and cannot fathom leaving my little girls behind.

I don't know Richard, I'm not familiar with his work, but this story makes me sick to my stomach.
I feel so badly for his family. RIP.

got to meet him a few times during the 2010 ALCS and other times when Texas came through Yankee Stadium, really nice guy and awfully sad news.

    Such a great tribute column.
Stronger and stronger, right to the end.

Crossed paths with him a few times.

Obviously, when people die unexpectedly, people tend to pile on the praise about how beloved someone was, and I completely understand that.

This is a case where it's 100 percent genuine. I've never heard a bad thing said about the guy.

Nolan Ryan attended the memorial service today, which says a lot.

What was the cause? Has that been disclosed?

That was the buzz when it first happened.
