I would like to point out that I am not involved in this debate.

Not yet, at least.

 

I can't understand why anyone would give any cashier their phone number or email address.

Can I get your phone number? No.
Email address? No.

Simple.

 

Yeah, but it's still annoying. It's like Target asking me if I want to "apply for a Red Card" when I buy a bottle of Diet Coke. I get annoyed when a cashier does anything other than ring up by purchase.

Well, six packs of it.

 

I usually refuse, except this one time, the woman at the cashier kept persisting in asking me, without saying it was for marketing purposes. Just, "Can I have your phone number?" "Sir, can I please have your phone number!" So, after the third time, I told her I already had a girlfriend (my future wife).

Her face turned a little red, and she finally said it was for marketing. I told her that she should really explain it the first time, so that would prevent some harassment.
