    I knew Phil from his days at Princeton.

    I covered the Whale when Phil's was there in the mid-'80s. He was a decent, smart, hard-working guy. We had our little spats but that's the nature of the business. I thought he was about 10 years younger. His age surprised me. RIP, Phil.
