Longtime Mississippi newspaperman Orley Hood died Friday at the age of 65 after a bout with leukemia.
Never met him in person, but certainly knew of his reputation. He held just about every newsroom job there is at one time or another, and worked at the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson for about 30 years. He was also a victim of the Gannett purge in 2008.

You'd have liked Orley, Batman. Fun guy who never met a stranger and a tremendous writer. And, yes, an even better person. :)

A memorial service for Orley will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson. I imagine there will be some laughter through the tears.
