CBS Radio top-of-hour-news just reported the sporting goods company is closing its doors, in part due to on-line competition. Modell's got started in the 1800s.

Modell's knows something about packing up vans.

Don't really get the reference, other than maybe Art Modell. Otherwise, carry on and maybe the troll (not you TT) will stay away.

For some reason I'll always remember Modell's for their outfield advertising at Shea Stadium.

Other than Dick’s, are there any big sporting goods chains left?

I am a devotee of the highest order of Academy.
My fantasy is to win some kind of contest and win big shopping spree there.

I'd spend it quick. I'm not confident in Academy's long-term outlook.

The days of big boxes where you can buy everything from underwear to golf clubs to grills and guns are coming to an end. Which will be a shame, because I do enjoy strolling Academy to kill time on rainy days.

My area has a Buffalo Wild Wings and an Academy sharing a parking lot. I go to Bdubs, eat, have a couple of beers, then go check things out at Academy.
A few months ago I was turned on to a website that offers a good selection of fishing lures, so I know where I can stock up on that if Academy goes under.
What I really like at Academy is their Magellan line of clothes.

That surprises me because there are so few brick and mortar places left where you can do the same. REI is the only other place I can think of in that genre.
