    I remember hours upon hours of Baseball Digest. Just dissecting every story when I got the new one. Getting my work done early in my fifth-grade class so I could take the extra time to read my Baseball Digest.

    And then, when I got the Baseball Register that Christmas ... whoa. I had my nose in that book for months. And then Sporting News' Daguerreotypes, the statistical Who's Who for Hall of Famers and other greats. That's what gave me an appreciation for the earlier generations of baseball, picturing the type of player a Rabbit Maranville was, a Lefty Grove, a Virgil Trucks.

    The thing I loved about the Bird is that all he wanted to do was have fun and play ball. It made him cool in my book.
