Jan Gabriel, who as track announcer and PR man for the US 30 Drag Strip in Hobart, Ind., become the first to repeat the date of a cheesy auto racing event in radio ads, has died.

Appropriately, he died on SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY.

Jan Gabriel also was responsible for reviving Team Demolition Derby, the most fucking awesome thing in the world. I put my own piece here because otherwise I would go on for 700 words otherwise: http://www.flakmag.com/sports/cook050627.html

You can find his original 1970 US30 Drag Strip commercial on this page:

We still don't know who invented, "You'll pay for the whole seat BUT YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE!"

Here's hoping the Malachi Brothers provide valet parking at the funeral.

You've got to love the sense of humor the Gabriel family is having. It's not lost on them that he died on SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! In fact, his wake is scheduled for this SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!

Given his drag-racing roots, his coffin should race somebody else's coffin up the aisle at the start of the funeral, with a big parachute popping out the back.

The trip to the cemetary will be a quarter mile long.
