Loel Schrader died last week at age 87. His funeral service was this morning in Huntington Beach.
He was an outstanding beat writer, then columnist, for the Long Beach paper. His expertise was college football and he was one of the first to realize that college recruiting was a big deal and needed to be covered.
He was an all-around nice guy, too. Very sad that he is gone.

Seems like this deserves more; Press-Telegram provide this:

Steve Bisheff of ESPN did a nice obit, too -- I think. It's behind the paywall.

Add to the list of things that if I ruled the world: If I have a paywall, general interest obits aren't behind it. Ever.

Little before my time in the SoCal newspaper wars/ranks, but knew of him and his rep -- despite being a Trojan.

And agree on the obit rule, SF.
