Kurt Vonnegut, Writer of Classics of the American Counterculture, Dies at 84

Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comic talent and urgent moral
vision in novels like "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle"
and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" caught the temper of his
times and the imagination of a generation, died last night
when in Manhattan. He was 84.

Damn, this sucks. I did my senior thesis on him. He is by far one of the best authors of the 20th century. I might go have an unfiltered Pall Mall for him right now.

He worked, very briefly, for Sports Illustrated in its infancy. He was a writer of great humor and grand intelligence, a fine, crazy voice of reason in a world gone mad - and a very nice man. He will be sorely missed.

NYT ... and SJ for that matter ... well ahead of the AP and CNN.

AP still hasn't moved a word.
