Half of the enormously talented Montreal musical duo has just died of cancer at age 63.

The McGarrigle Sisters recorded ten albums, some in French, some in English. They came from a bilingual family and their songs move effortlessly between the two languages.

As HC will attest, the McGarrigle Sisters are at the top of my all time favourite list. They were great songwriters and even better musicians.

"Heart Like a Wheel", probably therir best known song after Linda Ronstadt covered it, is a truly beautiful piece of poetry.

There's a YouTube clip embedded in the story.

I still listen to their first album, "Kate & Anna McGarrigle" regularly

Here's another clip of her doing "Willie Moore" with her son Rufus Wawnwright and Elvis Costello

RIP, Kate. It's like losing a member of the family.
