Of course, John Slattery the actor and his wife have been in a few Broadway plays while his father-in-law and mother-in-law were Broadway fixtures for decades, so I'm not sure which one the truly sophisticated New Yorker should have assumed it was.

I may not be at Moddy's level, but if Slattery was a Broadway star, I'd have been familiar with his name.

He's not. He's been in three short lived shows. (Only one had more than 100 performances, and that was in 1993-1994.)

His wife was in one show: http://www.ibdb.com/person.php?id=75260

I'm not sure what level of sophistication you have to possess to recognize someone based on relative fame of their father-in-law and mother-in-law.
