John Leptich died of bone cancer on Monday.

He most recently was a sports writer/copy editor at the East Valley Tribune. Before that he was a sports writer at the Chicago Tribune. He covered schools and the Sting (soccer) besides working on the desk.

He also was a sports memorabilia buff. In fact, his biggest story involved a Nolan Ryan card bought for a few dollars by a boy. He even appeared on Nightline to talk about this article.

Sad news. John livened up many a press box, and many a story.

  5. A baseball card-savy kid bought a $1,200 Nolan Ryan rookie card off an unsuspecting clerk who mistagged the card for $12.
    It was a good story.
