    All-time great soccer player and manager died of lung cancer today at age 68.

    I was just about to post this. Arguably one of the most influential people in the past 50 years of soccer.

    He played two years in the NASL just after his peak and was great.

    The story of him missing the 1978 World Cup is still incredibly fishy.

    I grew up in SoCal and still remember when the L.A. Aztecs of the NASL got him and he had an MVP season before the Aztecs sold him off so the franchise could stay in business. I didn't understand at the time (after all, they didn't even get a player for him), but it was my introduction to the reality that pro sports was in fact a business.
