    This is eerily familiar to Lee Roy Selmon's passing.

    Onward State is pretty damn reliable. I'm really surprised they'd fuck this up, if they did.

    It's possible the family spokesman is being less than truthful too.

    Ridiculous. Just let the man die in peace. Can we just stop this we have to be first on every story?

    @OnwardState Onward State
    A Paterno family spokesman has denied our initial report, which was corroborated by multiple sources. We're working on finding out more.

    ----

    Multiple incorrect sources?

    No we can't. That shipped sailed decades ago.

    Bingo. Congratulations. You scooped ESPN on the Joe Paterno passing. Except that he hasn't passed yet.

    If this gets dragged out a little bit, (like anything past the overnight hours), some folks at cbssports.com are gonna have some splainin to do.

    Highly unlikely.

    Then this is a textbook example of why it becomes CBSSports.com's tweet when they RT it. Kravitz touched on this -- in a context a zillion times less meaningful obviously -- on the Rob Lowe/Peyton Manning column: People look to you as a reliable news source, and when you put something like that out there, it's under your banner even if you think "ah we don't know if it's true."

    Dick's right, though -- insane that anyone would care about being the first on this story by a matter of minutes.

    CBS has pulled the story

    It's all in the sourcing. I'd love to know who the source was for CBSSports.com.

    The problem with Giffords is it was "confirmed" through a source who wasn't actually in a position to confirm anything. That's a huge mistake.
