Jerry Rutledge, longtime news and sports staffer (most recently preps editor) at the Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer and at The Anniston (Ala.) Star before that, died today. Details are still sketchy at the moment, as this just happened a few hours ago.

I didn't know Jerry well, but I'd played in a multi-state fantasy baseball league with him for the last several years. He was close friends with several of my close friends, though, and was a super guy in all my dealings with him.

I'm sure the L-E will have a story up soon enough with all the relevant details, but I just wanted to get it out there. Terrible, terrible news.

  2. OMG!!!! Shocking and horrible news. I just saw him a mere 2-3 weeks ago.

Don't know his age exactly, but he wasn't that old.

    Just, damn. RIP Jerry.

Blood clots in his lungs the apparent cause of death. Jerry was 52.
