    Jerry Grant, who claimed he was the first to cross the finish line in the 1972 Indianapolis 500, dies at 77.

    Hard-luck local Gary Bettenhausen had that race in hand but blew an engine late in the going. Grant then pitted in teammate Bobby Unser's stall (whether that was accidental or because his own tank was empty is still a matter of conjecture), handing the lead to eventual winner Mark Donohue.

    Ran 19 times in NASCAR -- for billionaire airline mogul Tom Friedkin -- including a fifth in the 1967 Daytona 500.
