    Damnation. Never expected that outcome.

If this is a guy who hadn’t played football in 22 years and still had CTE to the point that it could have been a major factor in his taking his own life, then it’s going to be an epidemic of these types of stories among former college players.

Jason Hairston had just been downstairs with his young son and daughter, who could not understand why their father was acting so strange. His wife, on the phone from across the country, was desperately trying to get her husband to say something, anything.

He ended the call without a word, walked upstairs and closed the bedroom door. He lay down on his wife’s side of the bed, lifted a gun under his chin and pulled the trigger.

The son was 10, old enough to have previously Googled “C.T.E.”, wise enough to know what had just happened, poised enough to block his 9-year-old sister, Coco, from instinctively running upstairs toward the sound. He pulled her outside. The police and family members were on the way.

    My God...

Breathtaking to think the epidemic is just starting.

Heckuva story by Branch. Had to boggle his mind that a couple years ago he's talking to Hairston about hunting stories, then ends up writing this.

That made my blood run cold.

    But, wow, great writing.

Exactly. I was not a fan of Branch when he was with the Fresno Bee (spoiled by Woj and Canzano, perhaps), but, damn, stories like this ...

And Goodell can't even deal with Maroon 5. How does anyone expect him, or the rest of the NFL, to deal with this?

If historians research our civilization in the future -- providing we don't wipe out civilization before then -- American football and its popularity will definitely draw more parallels to gladiators than using Roman numerals to denote championships. Imagine explaining to someone that not only do we require people who willingly perform in repeated violent collisions that entertain millions to attend high school and college, but that their fellow students and alumni pack massive arenas to watch them knock each other silly for three hours a week before they earn money to do so in front of the general public?

And you haven’t even gotten to the part where we demanded the college players perform in those violent collisions for a scholarship that didn’t lead to a degree and that they should have been grateful for the “opportunity” to entertain said students and alumni.
