R.I.P. Mr. Garner. Two of my favorite shows of all time was Maverick and The Rockford Files. He was a true legend.

I only knew him from 8 Simple Rules, but he was a magnificent actor on that show. May he rest in peace.

Perhaps the fact I mentioned them in the fourth post jogged your memory.

Hence the license plate on his Rockford Firebirds, 853 OKG. The OKG was said to stand for OKlahoma Garner. (*For some reason, this photo has 835 OKG but most later versions went with 853 OKG. No idea why the change.)

A witty, charming and self-effacing actor, successful in both films and TV. Rockford Files was as good as it gets, and Maverick had writers suited to Garner's portrayal. Big fan of his film work in Tank, Murphy's Romance and Victor/Victoria. Oh, and can't overlook the Support Your Local... films (Sheriff, then Gunfighter). Hilarious.

Don't forget "The Notebook". I went to that film because he was one of my favorite actors. Turned in a fine performance.

And if you are a fan his autobiography is worth the price.

Garner was beloved among race fans for his portrayal of Pete Aron in Grand Prix.

Did all of his own driving in the movie -- no mean feat considering that mid-to-late 60s F1 was about as dangerous as it got.

"The Scrounger", Pete Aron, Maverick and Jim Rockford? Play any one of those the way he did and you'd be remembered. To do all four? Wow.

RIP to one of the coolest.
