    Hubert was an excellent columnist and I liked him as a person enormously. This is very sad news. It seems from the story his health had been in poor shape for some time.

    One of the great ones, and definitely a big part of the legendary staff that made the Times the nation's top sports section in the late 1970s and early 80s, along with Van MacKenzie and many, many others. RIP, Hubert.

    A true giant of Florida sports journalism. I always regarded Mr. Mizell and Edwin Pope as co-No. 1s in the state back in the day.
