He was still going strong. Some of his best stuff was his last.

Gil Scott-Heron was a brilliant poet/historian/revolutionary/musician. I can still recall him playing on Saturday Night Live singing his heart out on Johannesburg. And if you've never checked out his work, listen to B-Movie. He will be missed. RIP

Take some time this Memorial Day weekend and listen to this set. If nothing else, listen to "It's Your World."

This is about as good as it gets and a big reason why I loved this guy. Although he crossed many decades, his social songs in the 70s resonated.

Gil Scott-Heron practically invented rap music, but I'll bet if you asked 10 young rap fans who he was, 9 of them would give you a blank stare. Pity. The guy was decades ahead of his time.

WOW. I just found out that Gil Scott-Heron was married to actress Brenda Sykes, a former love interest of Jim Brown.
Gil had one of the best band names too. Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson and the Midnight Band.

And meanwhile, Gary Tyler's life still wastes away in Angola.
