    He also spoke to a Jewish group about "our great Christian nation."

    I'd like to say Ev was one of a kind, but I've covered enough rural Arizona lawmakers to know that's not true.

    That was before my time, but I've heard about it.

    The complete nutjobs are getting rarer in the legislature but we still have them, mostly from rural areas where the key issues are mining rights and black helicopters. We had one woman a couple of years ago who sent out a campaign mailer warning people that the homosexuals were coming to get them and pointing out that her opponent had been married for 20 years but had no children. That was supposed to be proof the opponent was gay. She left out the fact that the opponent's wife was an ovarian cancer survivor.

    Isn't he the guy who, when asked if he would meet the Pope during one of his US tours, said "I don't know. Does he speak English?"
