    Dreading the day we have to say goodbye to our 15-year-old Laika mix. He's almost deaf now, but he still fetches the newspaper every morning. It's a treat watching him handle the monster Thanksgiving Day paper.

    I’ve thought pets give us practice for when we say good bye to our parents. It also gives our kids a way to understand death.
