He’d just been hired by the Las Vegas Review-Journal to cover the NFL. In fact, his first story was published Saturday.

Don Banks, longtime NFL reporter, dies at 56

Died in his sleep at a hotel in Canton while in town to cover Hall of Fame weekend. He was 56.

I had no idea he was so young. I remember when he was hired as the third nfl guy at SI and just loving his writing because it was a great middle between Dr Z and King. I modeled my writing style after him and I really feel that helped me get my first big (and last big) gig). I was in a couple of media scrums with him and always thought about telling him how much I admired his work. I wish I had.

Oh no. Terrible news. Respected the heck out of his work, full of knowledge but without ego.

    56. Shit.
