    It was a different time
People in the 80s cheered Deion Sanders’ flamboyance when people in the 60s booed Muhammad Ali’s
Allen, on a smaller scale, was a victim of that
    He was just being himself
What he did then wouldn’t get a second look today

    Liut and FileNotFound like this.

A nonconforming African-American athlete misunderstood and misrepresented by a white press establishment in the 1960s?

    Say it ain't so.

Mr. Allen was a true individual.

When Allen went to the Phillies for the second time he checked into spring training at the Fort Harrison Hotel, where he found out the hotel had been sold to the Scientologists. Needless to say he was a little surprised

This is a very good point.

Poster Ragu may not be old enough to understand the “atmosphere” of that era.

In a story I read about him yesterday, it said that "MOM" was because an umpire told him to stop writing stuff in the dirt, and mom was Allen's way of saying that his mom was the only one who could tell him what to do.

One must respect Mr. Allen’s “chutzpah.”

    You cannot argue with this!

It would be entirely possible that Allen offered both explanations. I distinctly remember reading he felt "MOM" would offend no one if he did it, and I read everything about Allen at that time.
