If a high school team tried to run the wishbone today, it would be like a scout team in my day, which I was a part of, trying to simulate the single wing on behalf of the only team in our state that ran it. We were three TDs better than that school but it took us a whole half to be able to defend it consistently before pulling out a close one.

There are a couple of teams in my area that run the double wing, which is similar to the wishbone with all the fakes, but also includes a lot of misdirection and even multiple handoffs on occasion. It's somewhat fumble-prone as you might imagine, but at least once or twice a game a simple fullback dive will bust wide-open for a 60-yard touchdown because the defense is sitting back waiting for something more elaborate.

The reduction of scholarships, spreading the talent, played a big part in the end of the wishbone. Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas and Alabama could no longer just crush everyone.

True enough. That game was the first time McKay saw it. But he figured out how to stop it.
Terry Donahue and UCLA used it and was rushing for 500+ yards a game in the Theotis Brown era. But they didn't get anywhere near that against USC. Neither did Oklahoma. Donahue abandoned it. Among other things, he said the Wishbone was a boring offense and, being in L.A., you have to factor in entertainment value (Showtime, anyone?).

Paul Johnson is highly sensitive to what it's called but his flex bone is similar to double wing T. If run well it's a bitch to defend because you always have to commit an inside backer to account for the FB or just what you wrote happens - a FB takes it 60 yards to the
    house.
