Actually, Ole Miss' greatest years in football were precisely the era everyone remembers/wants to forget: the late 50s and early 60s. Ole Miss was a lot better during the Manning years in everyone's memory than they actually were on the field. In the five-year period from 1959-63, Rebs went 46-4-3 and won three SEC championships. In Archie Manning's three years as the QB ('68-'70), they went 22-10-1 and didn't come close to winning the SEC.

Hate to be the guy who says this, but some in the black community exploit the civil rights history as much as some of the old school segs, who are all dying off anyway.
Just get on pacer and search to see how many deseg cases are still in the federal court system.
    You'd be surprised.

Also, Ole Miss has won the Cotton Bowl the last two seasons. While not a top-tier bowl, it is still better than most.

Sounds like a pretty overwhelming vote. When 75 percent of students want to break with a symbol of the racist past, it's kind of hard to dismiss that as "meaningless."

Let's just hope they do better than the last time they tried to come up with a new mascot.

Tuesday, the students voted in favor of crowning a new mascot to represent Rebel Nation ... and the favorite so far is none other than the most famous Mon Calamari in the entire universe.

My middle school mascot was a Rebel. We had a big old bearded Rebel waving a confederate flag on the gym. Then the school hired what McGruber would call a "Black African-American" principal and they changed the name. Now the school nickname is the Ravens and the logo is a Big NFL player holding a knife.

A portion of that last sentence may be fabricated.

Historically, having a plantation owner as your mascot would be equivalent to having a smallpox blanket as your mascot.

I'm confused. So the school nickname IS the Ravens and the logo is a Big NFL player holding a knife?
